Coin Challenge Answers - Gazebo
Are you sure you are ready to check to see if you know which coin contains the small round gazebo?
Here she is. Isn't she beautiful? The coin is the 1999 commemorative silver dollar for Dolley Madison. The small
image was extracted from the background of the obverse design shown here.
Though difficult to view, the artist's initials are just below and slightly to the right of the "1999" as shown
in this close-up view:
On the obverse, the initials are difficult to see clearly, but they are T. & Co. for Tiffany and
Company.
On the reverse, the initials can be more readily seen slightly to the left and above "MONTPELIER:"
Tiffany & Co. created a beautiful coin commemorating Dolley Payne Todd Madison.
She was the wife of our fourth president, James Madison, who served from 1809 to 1817. They were married in
September 1794. As part of the First Spouse series, the US Mint also provided a gold coin for Dolley Madison in 2007.
She is better known for her pleasant personality and society parties. For example, she held the first inaugural
ball when her husband became president. Not quite as publicized, however, was her ability to use her pleasant
personality and knowledge of politics to help her husband with difficult political meetings with either domestic or
international statesmen.
The White House's First Ladies web page for Dolley Madison states, "The delightful
personality of this unusual woman is a cherished part of her country's history."
In our book, Days of Our Coins, the Dolley Madison commemorative
silver dollar coin is featured on August 23 (reverse) and September 15 (obverse).
