Coins - Mint Sets Population

The US Mint's production of standard Mints Sets started at an estimated 5000 in 1947. Through the years the mint sets population has gone as high as almost five million for the special 1976 three piece 40% silver set. More recently, the population has consistently been under one million since 2006.

The mint sets listed below in year order include the uncirculated coin details by year of the quantity minted, the mints represented, the number of coins by denomination, the issue price and the face value.

Market values for these mint sets change frequently, for some sets as often as each week. As a result, current prices are not included in this list.

Mints: p = Philadelphia; d = Denver; s = San Francisco; w = West Point

Note 1: The actual sold population of the 1999 Susan B. Anthony two-coin mint sets is not readily available. Via press releases in 1999, the US Mint announced in September that 1.2 million of the two-coin mint sets would be made, but in November only 141,000 sets had been sold. Expect the actual number to be greater than 141,000 but much less than 1.2 million.

During the years of 1965 through 1967, the mint stopped adding mint marks to the coins. In addition, they did not produce proof sets for those years. Instead, the Special Mint Sets (SMS) were developed with only one coin of each denomination in the sets.

If someone had purchased one of all the mint sets from 1947 through 2010, they would have:

At issue price, all of the mint sets cost $520.45 to purchase one per year for all of the years.

Using early April 2011 market values, the mint sets would cost $6190 (probably more) to purchase individually today.

Mint Sets provide examples of the circulating coins from each year and each mint. All of them together give a history of the mints' circulating coinage over the years the mint sets were produced.
