Coins - Mint Sets
1990-1999
For most of the 1990s, the annual mint sets contained the uncirculated coins in one creatively designed envelope
which changed each year. With the introduction of the state quarters, the sets arrived in two envelopes, one for
the Denver coins and one for the Philadelphia coins.
For most of the 1990s, the mint sets contained ten uncirculated coins with one of the one cent, five cent, ten
cent, quarter and half dollar coins from Denver and from Philadelphia. The sets also included a token, the size and
color of the penny, in each pliofilm to identify the coins' mint - either "D" for Denver or "P" for
Philadelphia.
Mint sets were produced each year of the 1990s, and for the most part, were consistent in the coins that were
included. The 1990 through 1998 Mint Sets were packaged in two pliofilm sleeves with coins sealed in their own
compartments. The Philadelphia sleeve had blue edges, and the Denver sleeve had red edges.
But, in 1996, another coin in its own, separate pliofilm was added to the set - a 1996 Roosevelt dime with
the "W" mint mark for West Point. The specially minted coin celebrated the 50th anniversary of
the Roosevelt dime. Its pliofilm was clear with no color added to the edges.
With the new quarters introduced in 1999, the US Mint added two new pliofilm sleeves - one for Denver with black
edges and one for Philadelphia with white edges - just for the new uncirculated quarters.
After not producing the Susan B. Anthony dollar for several years, the US Mint struck the dollar again in 1999.
But, rather than place the dollar in the regular mint set, they offered the Susan B. Anthony dollar in an
individual dollar mint set.

pd = coins in the set were produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints
pdw = the set included coins from the Philadelphia, Denver and West Point Mints
Note 1 - In a US Mint press release dated September 27, 1999, the Director of the Mint announced that they
estimated their production to be 1.2 million uncirculated Susan B. Anthony two-coin mint sets.
With competition from the first year of the 50 State Quarters, a subsequent November 5, 1999 press release
noted only 141,000 of the Susan B. Anthony uncirculated mint sets had been sold. The actual number of the sold
two-coin Susan B. Anthony mint sets is not readily available, but expect it to be greater than 141,000 and
dramatically less than 1.2 million.
