Coins - Mint Sets
2000-2009
For the first years of the 2000s, the annual mint sets contained the uncirculated coins in two
creatively designed envelopes, one in red colors, the other in blue. The red envelope held uncirculated coins
from the Denver mint with the Philadelphia mint's uncirculated coins in the blue envelope.
Two pliofilm sleeves inside each envelope protected the uncirculated coins in the mint sets. The
Denver pliofilm sleeves were edged in red for the regular uncirculated coins and in black for the commemorative
state quarters. Similarly, the Philadelphia sleeves were edged in blue for the regular coins and in white for the
state quarters.
With the arrival of the presidential dollars, the US Mint changed the uncirculated mint set design to
blister packages. Still, though, the uncirculated mint sets took two packages - one red and one blue - to hold all
of the coins from the Denver and Philadelphia mints.
At the start of the 2000s, the mint sets arrived with 20 uncirculated coins. Each mint set
contained one of the one cent, five cent, ten cent, half dollar and dollar coins along with five
quarter dollar coins in the two envelopes.
During 2004 and 2005, the mints sets held 22 coins. The Westward Journey nickels celebrating the bicentennial of
the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition added a second nickel to each mint's uncirculated coins
in those years.
In 2007, the mint sets increased to 28 coins with the addition of the four presidential dollar coins. That
year, the format of the mint sets changed with each coin held in a clear molded "blister" in its either red or
blue plastic holder.
The maximum number of uncirculated coins, however, arrived in the 2009 mint sets. Those sets included one
five-cent, ten-cent, and half dollar coins, four one-cent coins, six quarter dollar coins and five dollar
coins. The dollar coins included one Native American dollar and four Presidential dollar coins.
