Coins - Mint Sets
1960-1969
Mint Sets of the 1960s included either five or ten coins. The early 60s included silver
coins, and in 1965 the cupronickel clad coins were introduced. Though the half dollar continued to have 40% silver
content.
Beginning the 1960s, the US Mint produced only 260,485 mint sets with one of each coin from Philadelphia and
Denver. The ten coins in the mints sets included two of the Lincoln penny, the Jefferson nickel, the
Roosevelt dime, the Washington quarter and the Franklin half dollar.
The Mint Sets were packaged in two pliofilm sleeves with coins sealed in their own compartments. The
Philadelphia sleeve had blue edges, and the Denver sleeve had red edges. Both sleeves included plastic tokens
identifying the originating mint.
In 1964, the Kennedy half dollar replaced the Franklin half dollar in the circulating coins and in the 1964 mint
set.
Starting in 1965, the coins no longer had mint marks. For 1965 through 1967, the US Mint did not produce proof
sets, instead they introduced the Special Mint Sets with only five coins. The 1965 special mint set was in a single
pliofilm sleeve with a blue token in the sixth compartment. The 1966 and 1967 special mint sets were packaged in an
elongated plastic lens with five slots holding the coins.
In 1968, the mint marks returned to the coins. The US Mint returned to the earlier packaging with
the pliofilm sleeves. One sleeve included the coins from the Denver mint and was edged in red. The second
sleeve with blue edges contained the coins from the Philadelphia mint and the penny from the San Francisco mint.
The half dollar, only minted in Denver, was not in the Philadelphia/San Francisco sleeve.
