Coins - 2009 Proof Set
Certificate of Authenticity and Coin Specifications
The US Mint placed a Certificate of Authenticity inside the 2009 Proof Set box. With eighteen coins, this
certificate became much larger.
The 2009 certificate uses an off-white card stock, and for most of the typeface, the ink is blue.
One side is shiny but not to the degree that it is glossy. The shiny side contains the outer information and the
Director of the Mint's message to the collectors.
On the front, "UNITED STATES MINT" is placed across the top near the fold. The letters contain spaces such that
the words go all the way across. In larger letters, "2009 United States Mint Proof Set® Certificate of
Authenticity" identifies the proof set.
On the second outer side, the US Mint's seal and banner is printed in red and blue above "UNITED STATES MINT."
They include their web site for further information and advise, "To preserve the beauty of your 2009 Proof Set,
store in a cool, dry place." At the bottom they printed a bar code identifier.
When opened with the shiny side up, the front and back can be easily seen along with the message from the
Director of the Mint.
The text says,
2009 United States Mint Proof Set®
Certificate of Authenticity
The United States Mint certifies this 18-coin set contains only genuine United States Mint proof coins,
produced to the exacting standards of the artisans and craftsmen of the United States Mint. Each coin bears the
"S" mint mark of the United States Mint at San Francisco, and is produced from carefully selected planchets, or
coin blanks, that have been burnished to a high luster. The polished blanks, which are carefully handled to
minimize scratches and abrasions, are struck on specially adapted coining presses. Each coin is struck at least
twice to bring forth every detail with remarkable clarity.
The 2009 United States Mint Proof Set includes six quarter-dollar coins honoring the District of Columbia
and the five U.S. Territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands
and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. George Washington's image appears on the obverse of each
quarter. The reverse of each quarter is distinctly different with images emblematic of the District of Columbia
and each of the U.S. Territories.
Also included in this set are four different one-cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of President
Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln cent. Lincoln's image
appears on the obverse of each one-cent coin. The reverses reflect four different designs, each one
representing a different aspect, or theme, of the life of President Lincoln. Birth and Early Childhood in
Kentucky (1809-1816), Formative Years in Indiana (1816-1830), Professional Life in Illinois (1830-1861), and
Presidency in Washington, D.C. (1861-1865). Each Lincoln one-cent coin has a composition of 95% copper, its
original metal content when first introduced in 1909.
Completing this set are four Presidential $1 Coins honoring past Presidents of the United States: William
Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor; the Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, Kennedy
half-dollar, and Native American $1 Coin featuring Sacagawea on the obverse and the "Spread of Three Sisters"
agriculture on the reverse.
The 50 State Quarters™ Program is authorized by Public Law 105-124. The coins are created to honor each of
the 50 States in the order in which they entered the Union. Their designs depict the history, geography, and
the rich diversity of our national heritage.
