The Friday Metals 02112011

This week, some of the metals climbed and fell; some climbed and fell sharply. Only one ended the week below last Friday’s close. Let’s look.

First, there’s gold:

Next is silver:

Third is platinum:

Last is palladium:

Take a look at the charts again. Do you notice anything odd? None of them look anything alike! Generally, the silver and gold charts have some similarities as do the platinum and palladium charts. These performance charts show markedly different paths over the past 30 days.

For the last week, gold climbed slightly from Friday’s close to Monday’s, then climbed even higher for Tuesday. Its closing performance for Wednesday and Thursday stayed fairly level and ended the week with a small fall downward.

Like gold, silver started the week up from Friday, then climbed much higher on Tuesday for a new 30 day high but not a new 60 day high. On Wednesday, silver fell back slightly, stayed flat for Thursday and fell back again on Friday. Silver’s ups and downs were somewhat similar to gold’s but still the charts look very dissimilar.

Now, platinum – just ouch. After ending last week on an up-note, platinum fell back slightly on Monday. Tuesday saw the white metal climbing again, and it kept fairly flat on Wednesday while achieving a new high point. Ahhh, but Thursday and Friday, platinum fell dramatically both days ending the week at a lower point than the last Friday.

Again, similar, yet different, palladium started the week climbing up from last Friday’s close. On Tuesday, palladium climbed sharply to a new high point, but for the remainder of the week, palladium fell and fell and fell. At the end of the week, palladium was back at the previous Friday’s close but not below.

Let’s look at the tables for the last week:

30 day high 30 day low Feb 11 Last Difference between
High and Low
Gold $1,388.00 $1,314.90 $1,356.80 5.3%
Silver $30.37 $26.68 $29.91 12.2%
Platinum $1,863.00 $1,781.00 $1,801.00 4.4%
Palladium $837.00 $780.00 $812.00 6.8%

Though they fell at the end of the week, silver, platinum and palladium gained new 30 day highs during the week on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Gold’s peak during the week, on the other hand, was still over $20 away from its recent high and roughly $60 away from its highest point.

Let’s look at this week’s close compared to the previous week’s close:

Feb 4 Last Feb 11 Last Percent Change Dollar
Change
Gold $1,348.60 $1,356.80 0.6% $8.20
Silver $29.14 $29.91 2.6% $0.77
Platinum $1,843.00 $1,801.00 -2.3% -$42.00
Palladium $812.00 $812.00 0.0% $0.00

Interesting…gold climbed slightly, silver went up significantly, platinum ended down and palladium stayed the same.

What will the next week’s metals do? Should be interesting!
