When you buy coin sets from the general populace or from dealers, it’s interesting what you find tucked away within the sets. Sometimes other collectibles are hidden inside a set. Other times, additional information can be found.
For example, a recent discovery included a booklet published by the US Mint called “A Brief History of the United States Mint 1792 – 2003.” Take a look:
Inside the front cover, twelve of the state quarters are shown with their unique reverse designs.
The first page begins with the history behind the US Mint including the struggles of Thomas Jefferson to standardize on an American currency produced on the new country’s soil.
In chronological order, the next pages tell the tale of the early Mint.
The booklet goes on to describe the functions of the US Mint and the services and products it provides.
At the end of the booklet, the Mint’s directors are listed in chronological order giving the dates they served and from which state they originated.
Ending the booklet, thirteen more of the state quarters are highlighted showing their reverse designs.
The booklet is small – just twelve pages not including the cover, but it provides a wealth of information about the US Mint in those few pages.
With the end year being 2003, perhaps the Mint wanted people who were borderline numismatists to become more interested in the history and the various products and services the US Mint provides.
What a fun find in a collectible set.
