  1. I have a Samuel peck civil war set with 2 coins in the middle and 1 gold on the front and 1 gold on the back. I was wondering if you have any interest in this set.
    thank you

  2. Hello,
In 1995, the US Mint produced several different sets of the Civil War Battlefield Commemorative Coins.

The set you describe is the “Union Case” set containing the silver dollar and cupro-nickel half dollar Civil War Battlefield Commemorative Coins. The US Mint also did a similar set with three coins in the middle.

The special holder emulated the photograph boxes made by Peck and Halvorsen and was called a “Union Case” because of the union of sawdust and shellac in the original boxes.

The gilded “coins” on the front and back are facsimiles of the US $10 gold coins.

If you want to know the worth of your set, the dealers at the monthly Greater Atlanta Coin Show will be happy to take a look at the set and make an appraisal based on the current market.

If you are interested in selling, the dealers can make offers as well.

The next coin show is Sunday, October 11, 2016. Open to the public at 9 am and closes at 5 pm. Admission is free.

You can find directions at Coin Show Location and Directions

Note: We did an article on this set back in April 2011: Union Case 2-Coin Set
